I keep trying to connect to my camera from the outside - why doesn't it work?

There are several reasons why you may not be able to connect to your camera externally.

First time setting up external access:

If you have never been able to access your camera remotely, please check that you have UPnP and Port forwarding setup. We have information on how to set up UPnP here and on how to set up Port Forwarding here.

External access has stopped working for me:

If you were previously able to connect to your camera externally, but can no longer do so, your Internet Service Provider may have changed your external IP address or it may have expired. This is nothing to worry about and can be easily fixed.

Firstly, go into the OWLR app and note down the external IP and port number for your camera. You can find this under Manage Camera > Network.

Please check it against the the one stated on http://www.whatsmyip.org/. If the external IP address given by whatismyip.org is different to the one assigned in the app, please change the external IP address assigned in the app to match that given. Keep the port number the same.

HTTP and RTSP ports:

Another reason why external access may not be connecting is if your camera has both HTTP and RTSP ports. HTTP and RTSP ports should not be assigned to the same number. You can check your camera's HTTP ports and RTSP ports on your camera's web interface. If they are the same number, please make your RTSP port 10 less than your HTTP port. You'll then need to delete the camera from the app and re add it.

Still not connecting?

We always advise making sure that your camera is running on the latest firmware and on the latest version of the app. This will reduce the chances of experiencing a bug in either the firmware or the app which may have been fixed by an update.
